Abstract

Trichilia catigua A. Juss (Meliaceae) has been widely used in Brazilian traditional systems of medicine for treatment of fatigue, stress, impotence and memory deficit. Recently, the plant extracts have been evaluated for their antidepressant, antioxidant, antibacterial and antiarrhythmic actions. It is also a component of herbal tonics that have widely been marketed in Brazil since the past twenty years. This review aims to provide a compilation of all available information about the plant including its botany, chemical constituents, and traditional uses, scientifically proven pharmacological activities, toxicological considerations and future prospects for research.
